Sub-Zero Repair Needham, MA (617) 610-6886

Built-in refrigeration service · Needham, MA

The cabinet is cold again by the time we leave the kitchen.

Built-in refrigeration is a different trade from appliance repair. Sealed systems, panelled doors, dual compressors and control boards that were designed to outlive the kitchen around them.

Asked on the phone

The six questions that come first

Answered the way they get answered when you ring: what the symptom usually means, and what it would cost to find out for certain.

My refrigerator is at 45°F but the freezer is fine. Is that one fault or two?

Usually one, and usually not the compressor. On a dual-refrigeration cabinet the two sections have separate sealed systems, so a warm fridge with a cold freezer points at that section alone — evaporator fan, damper, defrost heater or a drain that has iced closed. On a single-system model the same symptom means air is not moving from the freezer side, which is the fan or the frost pattern behind the rear panel.

How much is the visit?

A flat $95 covers coming out and diagnosing the fault properly, and it comes off the bill if you approve the repair. You get the price for the repair itself before anything is dismantled, so nothing is opened on an unknown number.

There is water under the front of the cabinet every morning.

That is almost always the defrost drain rather than the water line. Meltwater is meant to run from the evaporator tray down a small tube into a pan near the condenser; when the tube ices at its lowest point, the water backs up and finds the floor instead. Clearing it and finding out why it iced are two different jobs, and the second one matters more.

Can you work on a unit with custom cabinetry panels?

Yes. Panels come off on their own fixings and go back on the same alignment. It is worth saying at the point of booking, because a panelled column takes longer to open up than a stainless one and the appointment is planned for it.

Is it worth repairing a cabinet that is fifteen or twenty years old?

Often, and sometimes not. These units were built to be serviced, so a condenser fan, a control board or a door gasket is a sensible repair on an old cabinet. A failed sealed system on a unit of that age is a different conversation, and you will get that conversation honestly rather than a quote.

Do you cover Dover and Westwood as well as Needham?

Yes — Needham Heights and Needham Center, Dover and Westwood are the regular run, and the surrounding towns off Route 128 are within reach on the ordinary run.

We could not work out why the bottles felt warm when the display looked perfectly fine. The interior light was staying on and quietly heating the cabinet, and a failed door reed switch was behind it. Twenty minutes to sort once he had found it.

Top basket thawing while the bottom stayed solid. The fan behind the rear panel had iced over from a blocked defrost drain. He thawed it out properly rather than chipping at it, then cleared the drain.

Compressor was short cycling every few minutes and driving us mad in the next room. The condenser behind the plinth was choked with dust. He cleaned it out and the cycling settled within the hour.

Why a built-in is not a refrigerator with nicer doors

A freestanding refrigerator breathes out of the back and sits in a gap. A built-in breathes through a grille in its own base, carries its condenser where a cabinet maker put it, and is held in place by panels cut to match the run either side. That changes the diagnosis before anything electrical is touched: a cabinet drifting warm in a Needham kitchen is as likely to be a matted condenser or a blocked base grille as it is a failing compressor.

Dual refrigeration adds a second sealed system, so a fridge section at forty-five degrees and a freezer holding zero is a normal reading rather than a contradiction. Panelled doors add their own set: hinge sag, a gasket that has stopped pulling, a door that closes on the panel instead of on the cabinet. Most of it is diagnosable in the kitchen with the base grille off.

  • Integrated columns, over-under built-ins, undercounter drawers, wine cabinets and standalone ice machines
  • Sealed-system readings taken in the kitchen — suction and discharge behaviour, superheat, condenser temperature rise
  • Defrost circuits, evaporator fans, dampers, drain lines and door heaters
  • Factory-approved parts fitted where the platform calls for them

Longer write-ups from individual calls are collected in the notes, and the whole of how a visit runs is set out on the about page.
