Sub-Zero Ice Maker Making Cloudy, Hollow Cubes in Needham: Read the Shape

Cloudy, hollow or fused cubes usually mean the mould is filling short, not that the appliance is failing. Read the shape first, then work through the supply valve, the line and the filter in the order a Needham technician would.

Ice goes wrong slowly, which is why it is usually months old by the time anyone picks up the phone. First the cubes carry a white cloud in the middle. Then the tops go dished, like small contact lenses. Then one morning half the bin has welded itself into a lump that has to be broken apart with the handle of a spoon. Nothing else in the kitchen has changed, the drinking water is clear, so the water gets ruled out early — and that is nearly always the wrong call. The bin has been filing a report the whole time.

The bin already contains the diagnosis

Read the ice before anything gets opened. A hollow or dished cube means the mould took on less water than the cycle expected. Cloudiness means air and minerals came out of solution while the cube was freezing. A welded slab is a release-timing problem rather than a cooling one. Small cubes that are otherwise clear are a fourth signal again.

A mould that receives a short fill still freezes what it was given. The outer walls form first, the middle never had enough water to complete, and what lands in the bin is thin-topped or open in the centre. That single symptom points hard at flow, and flow is a plumbing question long before it is an appliance question.

Cloud in the centre is air and dissolved minerals being pushed ahead of the freezing front until they run out of anywhere to go. It describes how the water froze, not what came out of the tap, which is why clear tap water and murky ice sit together so comfortably in the same house.

A slab is different again. Cubes released on schedule into a bin somebody digs into every day stay loose. Cubes released late, or left undisturbed for a fortnight while a Westwood family is away, bond at their contact points and arrive back as one piece. Small but perfectly clear cubes are the mildest signal of the four: the fill ran slightly short, or the freeze was cut a little early, and nothing else is wrong yet.

Most of the built-in refrigeration in Needham Heights went in when a kitchen was opened into the back of the house. The water line was run once, during that job, and never looked at again. That is the era we generally end up investigating.

Everything upstream of the appliance

The machine can only freeze what arrives at it. Before anything inside is suspected, the supply gets examined: the stop valve, the tube running behind the cabinet, and the pressure reaching the inlet. A restriction anywhere on that path produces short fills, and short fills produce precisely the hollow, undersized cube sitting in the bin.

Renovations close valves. A tiler needs the wall open, a plumber isolates a run, and at the end of the day somebody turns the stop back on — not fully, just far enough that water appears. Enough for a tap is not enough for a timed fill. Older installations sometimes still feed off a saddle valve clamped to a copper line; the hole it pierces was small when it was new and does not improve with age.

Then there is the tube itself. In Needham Center the panelled column usually stands against an interior wall with cabinetry all round it, so every job is done from the front and the unit is pushed back at the end. Anything behind — the tube, a fitting, a coil of spare line — gets pinched against the wall, and the damage is invisible from the room.

Why does low pressure produce that specific cube? Because on most machines the fill is governed by time rather than measured by volume. The valve is held open for a set interval and whatever arrives inside it is what freezes. Reduce the flow and the same interval delivers less water, every cycle, forever, without anything ever announcing itself as broken.

Out in Dover, where the second unit often lives in a mudroom or a pantry at the end of a long run, part of that run may pass through space that is barely heated. A hard February cold snap finds it. Production falls away for a few days, returns on its own, and nobody links the two until the following winter does it again.

A saturated filter is a flow restriction

A cartridge at the end of its working life restricts flow long before it stops improving the water. Taste changes late; flow drops early. That is why “it still tastes fine” is not evidence of anything, and why a filter nobody has thought about since the last renovation is the most common single cause of ice that quietly shrank across a season.

Aftermarket cartridges are the other half of this story. Plenty of them fit the housing perfectly and pass less water than the part they replaced. If the cube shape changed within a few weeks of a cheap replacement going in, you already have your lead and it costs nothing to test.

Most units will run on a bypass plug. If shape and clarity recover a day or two after bypassing, the cartridge was the restriction and the question is answered. If nothing changes, the filter has not been proven innocent — it has only been proven not to be the whole problem, because a half-closed stop upstream will keep the fill short whatever is in the housing.

It belongs to your model, it is written in the use and care guide for that series, and a figure lifted from a forum thread about a different machine is worth nothing. When a fresh cartridge goes in, write the date on the body of it in marker, because the alternative is trying to remember a Saturday from two years ago.

The release side of the cycle

Harvest is the half of the cycle nobody thinks about. The freeze finishes first; then a touch of warmth at the mould breaks the grip, and the bin takes the cubes as they are pushed clear. Making ice and letting go of it are separate operations, and they fail separately.

That is why a slab points at timing. Release a fraction early and part-frozen cubes land wet and refreeze against each other in the bin. Release late and the mould holds cubes past the point where the next fill should have started, so production drops as well. Neither is a sign that the compartment is failing to get cold enough — cold is the one thing a slab proves you have.

A fair amount of this is observable from the room. Over a cycle the ejector sweeps cubes out of the mould, and a sensing arm rides over the heap to work out whether the bin is full. An arm propped up by one stray cube stops production entirely, and the fix is to move the cube. That is roughly where the homeowner’s part ends: do not lever a stuck cube out with a knife, do not turn the ejector by hand, and do not take a hairdryer to a mould that is still under power. Handing it over

Three things move this to the phone immediately: water on the floor, a supply fitting that is damp to the touch, or a compartment that is no longer holding its temperature. The first two get worse quietly and expensively. The third is a different fault altogether, wearing the ice maker’s clothes.

What a technician establishes is what the room cannot show you. A fill gets caught and measured rather than estimated. Inlet pressure is read at the valve, not inferred from how the kitchen tap behaves. Cycle timing is clocked end to end so that a harvest running early is separated from a fill running short, which from the bin look almost identical.

Why is my ice cloudy when the tap water is clear?

Because clarity is decided by how the cube freezes, not by what the tap delivers. Air and minerals dissolved in ordinary water get pushed toward the middle as the outside of the cube solidifies first, and they finish up trapped there as a white core. Uneven freezing makes it more pronounced. If the cubes went hollow or small at the same time, treat the cloudiness as part of a flow problem rather than a water-quality one.

How often should the water filter be changed?

On the schedule printed in the use and care guide for your model, and never on how the water tastes. A cartridge begins restricting flow well before anything shows up in a glass, so taste is a late and unreliable signal. Intervals differ between series, which is why we will not quote one here. Write the fitting date on the cartridge body in marker — it is the only record most households will ever keep.

The cubes have started fusing into a block — what changed?

Usually the release timing, or how often the bin gets emptied. Cubes dropped slightly early land damp and freeze to one another on contact. Cubes left for a fortnight in a bin nobody digs into will bond at their touching faces even when every part of the machine is working correctly. A slab does not mean the compartment is too warm; if anything it demonstrates that the cold side is doing its job.
